“I was so pleased with the lads’ attitude”: Boss compliments Lancaster City on their FA Cup progress
Lancaster City were in FA Cup replay action on Tuesday evening.
Jimmy Marshall praised his Lancaster City players after they booked their place in the second qualifying round of this season’s FA Cup.
The Dolly Blues will travel to Bradford (Park Avenue) in the next stage a week on Saturday, September 19, after winning 2-0 in their replay at Tadcaster Albion on Tuesday.
Jim Craig opened the scoring with a close-range goal on seven minutes and Steven Yawson doubled their advantage just after the half-hour.
As well as a place in the next round, victory was also worth £2,250 from the cup’s central prize fund this season.
Speaking after Tuesday’s win, Marshall told club media: “I thought we were good, we knew we needed to start the game quick and put it to bed.
“I thought we were good tonight, we were better at the ugly side of the game.
“We defended our box well, we were quicker to first and second balls, and we started on the front foot,
“To be fair, we went in at 2-0 and it could have been three or four.
“We focused on playing football in the final third, we didn’t take many risks in the middle or at the back.
“We were a little more direct tonight and I thought it worked really well, I was so pleased with the lads’ attitude.
“They were good in and out of possession, they worked their socks off; it’s not an easy place to come on a Tuesday night and we needed to make sure we got through.”
The win means that City’s scheduled league game at Whitby Town, which was due to be played on the 19th, will now have to be rearranged.
Off the pitch, the club confirmed that Yawson has signed a new deal which keeps him at the club until the end of the 2026/27 season.
The deal also includes the option of an extra year on Yawson, who has scored 14 goals in 45 matches since joining the Dolly Blues at the start of last season.
“I don’t think people will mind me saying it’s something we’ve been looking at for a while,” Marshall added.
“He’s done really well since he came in. We’re trying to build something here and we want to keep hold of our best players.”
