“I think I have seen a change in the group”: Morecambe boss on climbing the National League North table

Home wins have helped to fuel Morecambe’s recent resurgence.

Morecambe manager Adam Lakeland says he is proud of his history-making players after they sealed a seventh successive home win with Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Scarborough Athletic, writes DEREK QUINN.

It is the first time the Shrimps have achieved such a feat at the Halo Aerospace Stadium and 16 years since they enjoyed a similar run at home.

Lakeland believes the run shows the progress his team is making as they keep climbing the National League North table.

He said: “I know previous Morecambe teams have competed higher up the pyramid than we currently find ourselves, but all we can do is try and win games in the division we are in - and we have been doing that.

“It is important we keep that going and make this place a real fortress because if we do, it will enable us to keep climbing.”

The Scarborough win was their third in seven days, following on from the victories against Merthyr Town and Darlington.

Those wins saw the Shrimps move up 11 places in the week to eighth in the table, leaving them just outside the play-off zones.

It was a point that Lakeland was keen to stress, adding: “This division is crazy. Going into the Merthyr game we were 19th and 10 points off the top.

“Now we are in the top 10 with a game in hand on several of the teams above us, so we are going in the right direction.

“I think I have seen a change in the group. I feel like all the blows that we have had so far this season, all the moments of adversity, the struggles we have had at times on the road, the bits of bad luck and the injuries we have had have pulled us closer together.

“I think that closeness has been very apparent in the results this week because we have had lads on the pitch who really are running on empty.

“Sometimes you just have to go to depths you don’t know you have and find a way to win a game of football.

“They have done that and I am incredibly proud of the players and staff, every single one of them.

“I have never had any doubt that when we have everyone available, we will be really competitive in this league.

“We just have to keep working hard and trying to get better every day and I am sure that we will keep on getting positive results.”
