“It’s got all the makings of a good game”: Jim Bentley targets a winning end to Morecambe's week

Jim Bentley wants his Morecambe players to finish the week on a high as they head to Sutton United tomorrow.

The Shrimps have 10 games left in which to avoid relegation from the National League’s top flight, starting with the trip to Gander Green Lane.

Morecambe’s 3-2 win at Wealdstone on Tuesday leaves them six points from safety, albeit having played two matches more than fifth-bottom Brackley Town.

They travel to a Sutton team who have won three and drawn one of their last five in climbing to 17th position, six points clear of the drop zone.

Bentley said: “Sutton have picked up of late. They are sixth in the form table and are on a good run.

“We’ve got a spring in our step now, so it’s got all the makings of a good game.

“We’re going there to win because we need to win games of football, it’s as simple as that.

“Hopefully we can do that on Saturday because, if we do, it will cap off a positive week.

“OK, we lost against York City but it was a day where the club came together and there was a feelgood factor.

“We know it will be a tough game but I’m sure their manager (Chris Agutter) is saying to them it will be a tough game as well because of how we’ve been performing.”

Tuesday’s victory was the second in eight matches since Bentley returned to the dugout for a second spell in charge a month ago.

Having fallen behind after three minutes, the Shrimps looked well on the way to victory as Chris Popov and Jack Nolan (2) had them 3-1 in front going into the last 20 minutes.

However, they conceded again and had to play out the latter stages with 10 men after Lewis Payne’s dismissal for a second caution.

“It was a long way, especially on a Tuesday, but we got our rewards,” Bentley added.

“We didn’t get out of the traps but it was pleasing to be leading at half-time and the second half was a bit better.

“We were still under pressure at times, but scored a great goal, so to get three points with 10 men was great – but it wasn’t brilliant for the heart rate!”
