Lancaster City Council backs apprenticeships with £1m investment

Up to £1m is to be invested by Lancaster City Council to provide a range of training and job opportunities with the creation of a new apprenticeship programme.

The scheme, which was recently approved by the council’s cabinet, will see up to 30 new apprenticeship posts established across a range of council services.

Successful candidates will work towards a recognised qualification while earning a wage and gaining valuable workplace experience.

The investment will also ensure the council is developing the skills and experience it needs to continue delivering high quality services.

Coun Paul Stubbins, cabinet member with responsibility for corporate services, said: “This is an important investment not only in the council but the local community.

“Like every organisation we need to think ahead about the skills we will need to continue providing the services our communities rely on.

“Apprenticeships give us an opportunity to develop those skills while providing young people with valuable experience, training and recognised qualifications.

“This investment will ensure we can develop the skilled and talented people we will need to meet the changing needs of our communities in the years ahead.”

Funding for the scheme will come from the council’s reserves. All apprenticeship roles will be additional opportunities and will not replace existing employees.

Details of how to apply for the posts will be made available in due course.
