Coming in is keeper Joe Young, who has signed a one-year deal with the option of another 12 months at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

The 23-year-old, who came through the ranks at Wolves and is a former England U17 international, joins the Shrimps after leaving fellow National League North club Buxton.

Young said: “As soon as I heard Morecambe were interested in me, I met with the gaffer (Adam Lakeland) a few days later and he spoke to me about everything, and it was something that excited me.”

Morecambe manager Adam Lakeland added: “I’m delighted that Joe has joined us at Morecambe.

“For me, he was one of the best goalkeepers in the National League North last season, helping Buxton reach the play-offs where they were ultimately defeated by South Shields.

“I believe Joe will only improve, having had that experience, and at 23 years old, has his best years ahead of him.

“He may not be the biggest in stature but he is sharp, agile, makes big saves and is excellent with his feet, all attributes we feel will complement us next season.

“He adds to the already strong goalkeeping department heading into the season and I look forward to working with him.”

Leaving the club, however, is Gwion Edwards who has opted to move on after two-and-a-half years with the club.

The 33-year-old was described as being in negotiations with the Shrimps, when their retained list was published in mid-May.

However, after 85 appearances and 12 goals, he has departed amid reported interest from Exeter City.

A Morecambe statement said: “During his time at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium, Gwion made a valuable contribution on and off the pitch, with his professionalism, leadership and commitment earning the respect of teammates, staff and supporters alike.”

Edwards’ exit follows that of Jack Nolan, whose departure was announced last weekend.
