Morecambe manager will not press the panic button ahead of Southend United trip

Morecambe boss Derek Adams will not get carried away after his side’s difficult week as they prepare to face Southend United tomorrow.

This time last week, the Shrimps were preparing for back-to-back home games against Cambridge United and Newcastle United, having won three of their first four matches.

Seven days later, however, Morecambe head to Roots Hall on the back of two one-sided scorelines which saw them concede 12 goals without finding the net.

They now travel to face a Southend side in turmoil on and off the pitch.

On it, they have followed up last season’s relegation with four straight defeats in all competitions this time around.

Two of those have come in League Two, seeing them bottom of the early table and yet to score a goal.

Off it, they have been given a six-week extension to pay off a tax bill close to £500,000 with fans reportedly set to stage a protest against the running of the club after tomorrow’s match.

Speaking after Wednesday’s 7-0 Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle United, Adams said: “Southend came down from League One last year and they’re a decent outfit who will have seen the result tonight and from Saturday (5-0 loss to Cambridge United).

“We’re well aware of the improvements needed but we have to remember we’ve won at Grimsby and Cheltenham, and at home to Oldham.

“We have to be careful that we don’t be too negative. You see the results from tonight: 6-0 for Chelsea (against Barnsley) and 5-2 for Everton (against Fleetwood Town), it tells you the gap between the Premier League and the rest.”

The Shrimps head south with two new faces in their squad following this week’s arrivals of Liam Gibson and Yann Songo’o.

A former Newcastle youngster, Gibson offers another option at left-back following Luke Conlan’s departure to AFC Fylde.

Midfielder Songo’o reunites with Adams after working together at Ross County and Plymouth Argyle.

Tomorrow’s game may come a little too early for both men but, whoever plays, Adams has a simple message when it comes to their defensive efforts.

“We need to stop conceding goals,” he said.

“We’ve conceded two from corners in the last two games, two own goals and seven from outside the box.”
