After conceding 12 goals in two games against Cambridge United and Newcastle United, they fell behind again thanks to an early Liam Gibson own goal at Roots Hall.

However, Adams was happy with his side’s spirit to fight their way back into the game before winning 2-1.

He said: “We didn’t start particularly well. The goal was just what we didn’t need after the week we’d had.

“It could have had a real negative effect on us but in the end it turned out to really be their only effort on target in the game.

“After the goal we had umpteen chances in the first half to get one back.

“When you look back over it we should have been ahead at the break, especially as we actually cleared two of our efforts off their line ourselves when we dominated.

“We could have played better in the first half but in the second period we knew we had to start on the front foot and we did that with a terrific goal.

“Adam Phillips put in a great cross and Aaron Wildig timed his run to perfection to get us level.

“Then we got the second on the counter-attack which is something I really believe is possible in this division.

“John O’Sullivan picked out Adam Phillips with another good ball and he produced a fantastic finish into the top corner.

“After that we had to defend balls in and around the box, and we did that really well and Jake Turner didn’t have a save to make which was good.

“It’s never easy to travel to a place like Southend, especially when you go a goal behind early in the game. But we kept going and thoroughly deserved the win.”
