Mbulu had also figured for clubs including Millwall, Motherwell and Crewe Alexandra prior to signing for the Shrimps.

Crewe said: "Christian was an immensely popular member of our dressing room and many of the players and staff continued to be in touch with him.

"When we visited Morecambe back in late February, you could see how popular he was with everyone at our club."

“This is truly shocking and tragic news and our hearts go out to Christian’s family and friends,” added Millwall academy director Scott Fitzgerald.

“All of us have so many fond memories of Christian from his time with Millwall and it had been so encouraging to follow his progress and development as a player from afar. We are truly shocked and saddened by this horrific news."

Motherwell chairman Jim McMahon said: “We are shocked to hear of the news of Christian’s death.

“He was such a friendly, pleasant and dedicated young man who we loved having around Fir Park.
