Morecambe 0 Newcastle United 7: Derek Adams pays tribute to the Magpies following a heavy defeat
The Shrimps followed up Saturday’s 5-0 home loss to Cambridge United with a 7-0 defeat to Newcastle at the Mazuma Stadium.
Goals from Joelinton (2), Miguel Almiron, Jacob Murphy and Isaac Hayden saw Morecambe trail 5-0 at half-time, having already seen Toumani Diagouraga sent off for a poor challenge on Sean Longstaff.
Jamaal Lascelles and a Sam Lavelle own goal completed the scoring after the break to leave the Shrimps focusing on Saturday’s trip to Southend United.
“It was an extremely difficult night for us,” Adams reflected afterwards.
“Newcastle were absolutely outstanding; the way they passed the ball, the way they pressed and the goals they scored, they undoubtedly deserved to go through.
“To win 7-0 away from home, they respected the competition very well. You just have to see the team they put out and the goals they scored.
“The sending off at 4-0 didn’t help us but they were excellent. The gulf in class between League Two and the Premier League is massive.”
Although Newcastle made nine changes from the weekend, they were still able to name a side full of Premier League performers.
While it would be easy for the Morecambe players’ heads to drop after such a loss, Adams believed they could learn a lot from the game.
He said: “Nights like this tell you what a real football player is - how to control the ball, how to pass it, how to create and take chances.
“They are real football players, that’s why they are paid the money they are and that’s why people go out there and spend the money they do on them.
“They are a testament to Newcastle United and their manager (Steve Bruce). They put on a show tonight.”
