Heysham woman with breast cancer sets up walking group for anyone affected by disease

A woman currently receiving treatment for stage 3 breast cancer has created a walking group in Morecambe for anyone affected by the disease.

Zara Cowell, 44, from Heysham, created Morecambe and Lancaster Breasties and the group meets every Wednesday for a walk on Morecambe promenade.

She has also set up a JustGiving fundraising page and has already raised over £1500.

Zara said: "This October, for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’m taking on a challenge that means more to me than I can really put into words — I’ll be walking 100 miles in 31 days to raise money for Breast Cancer Now.

“This isn’t something I ever imagined I would be doing.

“I’ve been through stage 3 breast cancer, chemotherapy and a mastectomy, and I’m now about to start radiotherapy.

"Cancer and the treatment that comes with it have changed my body, my strength and my everyday life.

“Before all of this, I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about walking 100 miles. Now, it feels like a huge challenge.

“I’ve found myself becoming much slower and losing a lot of the strength I once had. There have been times when my body simply hasn’t felt like my own. So I’ve decided to turn those 100 miles into something positive.

“This walk is about rebuilding. Rebuilding my strength. Rebuilding my confidence. Rebuilding the belief that my body can still do amazing things after everything it has been through.

“Every mile will be a little reminder that I’m moving forward.

“And while I’m doing something personal for myself, I also want every step to help support the charity that is working to make a difference for so many other people facing breast cancer.

"I have 30k left of the 100 miles in October challenge. I have raised over £1500 but I want to get more people involved and raise more awareness around breast cancer.

"If you’re able to donate, no matter how big or small, I would be incredibly grateful. And if you can’t donate, simply sharing my fundraiser or following along with my challenge would mean just as much.

“Thank you for supporting me, cheering me on and helping me turn something difficult into something positive.”
