Heartbreak after Morecambe sports club broken into on opening weekend

A Morecambe sports and social club has been broken into on its first night after reopening.

Trimpell Sports and Social Club welcomed everyone through their doors again at the weekend after a period of closure due to ‘urgent safety works’ but shared the upsetting news that the club was broken into overnight and two windows were smashed.

A spokesman for Trimpell said: “After everything that has gone into getting Trimpell Sports & Social Club back open, and after finally welcoming everyone through our doors again last night, we are devastated to say that the club was broken into overnight and two of our windows have been smashed.

“It’s incredibly disappointing and heartbreaking, particularly when we’ve worked so hard over the last few months to get the club back up and running.

"Last night was supposed to mark a fresh start for Trimpell, and we were so looking forward to building on that.

“It’s upsetting to think that after all the hard work, time and effort put in by so many people, this is how our reopening weekend has started.

“Our CCTV shows someone walking along the cycle track, past the club towards Westgate and the stables, at approximately 3.15am.

“Around a minute later, at approximately 3.16am, two men were seen leaving the club and heading in the same direction.

“We are particularly keen to speak to the person walking along the cycle track, as they may have seen or heard something that could help us understand what happened.

“We want to make it absolutely clear that we are not suggesting this person was involved in any way.

"We are simply asking whether they may have witnessed something or noticed anything unusual.

“If you were in the area around 3am to 3.20am, walking along the cycle track, near the club or the stables, or if you heard or saw anything unusual, please get in touch.”

A police spokesman said: “This was reported to us at 10.30am on Saturday. The burglary has happened sometime between 2am and 9.30am.

“Two windows were smashed to gain entry. Nothing was taken.

“Any witnesses or anyone with information, please contact 101 – quoting log 0539 of October 31.”
