County’s higher education is among the world’s elite says new league table

Staff and students at two of the county’s universities are on top of the world - literally.

Both Lancaster and the University of Central Lancashire are rated among the world’s elite higher education institutions in the latest prestigious QS World Rankings released this week.

Nearly 4,000 universities were considered in the rankings and 891 evaluated.

Lancaster University has risen 39 places to be ranked 121 in the world.

Linguistics was ranked very highly, at 13th in world, while social sciences and management was ranked at 77th.

The rating follows other plaudits this year whch have seen Lancaster ranked in the UK Top 10 in the latest league tables from both the Guardian and the Complete University Guide.

The most recent is the Guardian University league tables 2016 where Lancaster has maintained its ranking of 10th out of 119 British universities.

In the Guardian subject tables physics is ranked second only to Oxford.

Other top 10 subjects are accounting and finance, art, biosciences, drama and dance, chemical engineering, history, media and film studies and social work.

Earlier in the year Lancaster rose two places to be ranked ninth nationally out of 126 UK universities in The Complete University for 2016, forging ahead of other Russell Group institutions in the region.

Preston-based UCLan was the first “modern” university in the region to be added to the prestigious league table in 2010 .

It has retained four out of a five-star rating overall. in the QS Stars Development Road Map

Six areas, teaching, internationalisation, employability, facilities, social responsibilty and inclusiveness, achieved the maximum five stars.

UCLan Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Mike Thomas said: “To gain an overall score of four stars out of five in the QS World Rankings is testament to the progress we are making on the world stage.

“We are particularly pleased to be awarded the maximum five stars in several of the sub-categories, which reflect high levels of student satisfaction, a good graduate employability rate and extensive international research collaborations..

“We have also been recognised for our commitment to social responsibility. An obvious example of this is UCLan’s £200 million Masterplan development which, over the next 10 years, aims to create a unified, sustainable and welcoming campus that will benefit not only students but also the wider community.”
