Morecambe embargo lifted by the National League following pensions fund issue

Morecambe had been placed under a National League embargo last month.

Morecambe are no longer operating under an embargo according to the National League website.

The Shrimps were among six clubs to be placed under embargo on August 11 for what was described as ‘non-compliance with league financial regulations’.

It was put in place with the club having been reported to the Pensions Regulator for non-payment of employee contributions.

Morecambe’s chief operating officer, Steve Dewsnip, subsequently confirmed that was the reason for the restriction.

That left them unable to bring in new players to reinforce manager Adam Lakeland’s squad or change the terms of any existing loan deal.

However, the ‘judgements & decisions’ page on the league’s website said that the embargo had been lifted on Wednesday: five days after the club announced its pension funds issues had been resolved.

It is another boost to the club, who are looking for a third consecutive win in National League North this weekend after back-to-back victories over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The five other clubs to receive an embargo at the same time as the Shrimps - Altrincham, AFC Fylde, Aldershot Town, Hornchurch and FC Halifax Town - had their respective restrictions lifted at various points between August 12 and 24.

Morecambe have been approached for comment.
