Lancaster City 0 Workington AFC 3: Ten-man Dollies are defeated at home
Lancaster City were beaten on Bank Holiday Monday.
Lancaster City’s winning run came to an end at the hands of an in-form Workington AFC team on Monday, writes CONNOR PHILIPSON.
The Dollies huffed and puffed but fell victim to three well-worked goals from the Reds.
It was Workington who had the first opportunity, Brad Kelly making a good save to palm away a looping header from Brennan Dickenson.
However, the visitors’ early pressure would pay dividends on 11 minutes with Luke Hunter finding the top corner from a line-splitting pass by Tom Stephenson.
The Dollies looked to respond, coming close soon afterwards when Alfie Cunningham’s free-kick was pushed over the bar by Alex Mitchell.
However, the sting was soon taken out of the game as Sekouba Sanogo had to be stretchered off.
Toby Oliver also had to depart with injury but Lancaster burst into life just before the break.
Sam Bailey’s 25-yard effort floated just wide of the top corner, quickly followed by Mitchell denying substitute Charlie Bailey.
Despite a promising start to the second half, it was Workington who doubled their advantage on the hour mark when captain Brad Carroll got the faintest of touches on a wonderfully whipped Kai Nugent free-kick.
Substitute Dan Hopper then sealed the victory with five minutes remaining, sliding the ball under Kelly after a rapid counter-attack.
To top off a frustrating afternoon for the Dollies, James Nolan was given his marching orders in the fourth minute of stoppage time for a second bookable offence.
Jimmy Marshall’s side look to bounce back on Saturday, when they host Tadcaster Albion in the FA Cup’s first qualifying round.
