“I believe we can turn things round, 110 per cent”: Morecambe boss is keeping the faith

A defiant Ashvir Singh Johal remains confident that his Morecambe players can climb out of the relegation zone and survive in the National League this season.

The Shrimps’ boss saw his side suffer a 17th league defeat in 28 matches last Saturday, when they went down 2-0 to Solihull Moors at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

Morecambe’s fifth defeat in six games left them five points from safety, but Johal believes his side have enough quality to turn the corner.

Speaking after Saturday’s defeat he said: “In the last three games we have found a way to create chances, now we need to find a way to take those chances.

“We are very confident in that we have a lot of fixtures coming up against teams around us and we know we can beat the teams higher up the table.

“I believe we can turn things round, 110 per cent. Being where we are now in the table is not a good situation, but I believe we have the tools, the staff and the togetherness to turn things round.

“We have got one point from the last nine, which is not what we want and not good enough, but we have been progressively getting better, and we have to make sure we score more of the chances we create and close the back door – and I have total belief we can do that.

“The players have that belief too that they can turn things round and I think we have seen their drive in the past few weeks, especially in the second half against Solihull – where we were camped in their half in the final stages – and the way they fought to the end against Scunthorpe.”

Morecambe don’t play again until next Tuesday, when they visit Altrincham for their rearranged game after the postponement earlier this month.

They have a free weekend this Saturday as a result of Wealdstone – their scheduled opponents – playing in the FA Trophy, with the Shrimps having exited in round four.

In terms of outgoings, the club has confirmed that Daniel Ogwuru has joined Workington AFC on loan for the rest of the season.

Tom Tweedy’s exit has also been announced, with the Burnley loanee having joined Darlington after only one substitute appearance for Morecambe last September.
