A Lancashire health club has been chosen to pioneer new fitness accreditation which aims to set a new standard for the industry.

3-1-5 Health Club already has a reputation for quality equipment, coaches, classes, and social activities, building a friendly community around fitness.

But now they are working with The Active Standard (TAS), as one of the few clubs pioneering the roll out of a new accreditation scheme to standardise quality of provision.

Why set new standards?

ukactive has launched the new benchmark system to help ensure consistent and quality of service across the country … it matches the 3-1-5 Health Club ethos, which owner Sean Thornton strives for every day in his business.

The new accreditation will allow gyms and active sports organisations to prove they are operating to a certain baseline as standard, and that their quality, professionalism and compliance is in line with UK law.

For individual gym users, they will have the reassurance of knowing their venue, and the staff it employs, has been trained to the latest standards, and are committed to a high level of service.

How do you gain TAS accreditation?

To achieve The Active Standard, operator members are assessed by a third-party assessment body against a strict set of criteria, covering requirements for health and safety compliance, professional standards, safeguarding measures and data protection. Certification lasts three years before re-assessment is required to ensure standards are maintained.

At 3-1-5 in Lancaster, general manager Deena Gillan is heading up the drive to pioneer the new programme and prove to the external assessors that they are achieving, and surpassing, the standards

Owner Sean Thornton says the latest surveys into the public’s attitudes to fitness show there’s a real appetite for well run and affordable fitness options.

And he says there are six key areas his business is targeting, which chime with the ethos and values of the new TAS rating system.

The evolving role of health clubs

Health clubs are increasingly vital in promoting both physical and mental well-being through expert-led fitness programs and holistic health services.

Comprehensive health benefits

From weight loss and improved strength to enhanced cardiovascular fitness, regular participation in health club activities offers wide-ranging physical and mental health benefits.

Supporting prevention and management of health conditions

Fitness programmes can help prevent and manage various conditions, such as cancer and heart-related conditions.

A strong sense of community

Health clubs, like 3-1-5, foster a supportive, inclusive environment where members can build connections, stay motivated, and achieve their fitness goals together.

Leading in knowledge and expertise

3-1-5 Health Club exemplifies leadership in the fitness industry by adhering to ukactive’s ‘The Active Standard’ initiative, promoting excellence, safety, and effectiveness in fitness services. And Deena has been hand-picked to lead the TAS accreditation.

Inclusive services for all ages and abilities

Offering a diverse range of programs and services, 3-1-5 Health Club caters to everyone – from children to seniors and beginners to seasoned athletes.

He said: “We’ve always been forward-thinking, and our ethos is on building an inclusive community of like-minded people, whether gym fanatics or novices just starting out, and giving them a safe, well-run and friendly environment.

“We are very proud to be one of the pioneer clubs trialling the TAS standards – it matches the values we already demonstrate every day, and we are delighted to be playing our part to help bring this in around the country.
