Find your fitness age: Body scan at Lancaster health club can help reset your fitness goals

Vowing to change your ways and invest in yourself after a festive blow out is as traditional as turkey – but are there ways to do it to help the mojo stick?

New Year’s resolutions often end with people falling off the wagon – and it’s not hard to see why. January new-starts often set themselves unrealistic goals, then wonder why ‘real life’ gets in the way. If you deny yourself all of life’s treats, or set targets that can never be achieved, becoming disheartened is pretty much inevitable.

We asked Sean Thornton, owner of 3-1-5 Health Club in Lancaster, to talk us through the wisdom he and his team of coaches have learned through many years of helping people find their own level of fitness, and his advice for kick-starting 2025 the way you mean to continue.

Do it for the right reasons

You should think of fitness and health changes not as an imposition, or a necessity, but as a positive investment in yourself. In other words, it’s time to prioritise you. Think of your time at the gym, in the pool, or at a fitness class, as your ‘me time’. It’s a chance to escape the humdrum of the office or the hectic pace of family life, and just concentrate on you. And the best bit? As every week passes you will see little changes – from more stamina and strength to losing inches. Investing in yourself pays off!

I don’t need to lose weight? Why bother with a gym?

It’s amazing the number of people who come to us even though they are as physically fit as they want to be– the mental health and social benefits of exercise are huge, and that matters to so many people. They feel such positive benefits and know the regular exercise is a huge part of their feeling of wellbeing.

Creating better habits

When research shows more than 50 per cent of people want to improve their fitness levels in 2025 then there’s work to be done in keeping people engaged. But our team know the pitfalls and can help you avoid them, and help you build up a fitness programme until it becomes second nature, and the answer to your goal. The team can talk through your aims, and your available time, and build a realistic programme filled with a good balance of things you enjoy and things you may not have tried or that physically challenge you, to help achieve good results.

It’s all a bit daunting

We understand that; every one of us started out on our own journeys at some point, or have had to restart along the way. Think of joining 3-1-5 Health Club as a ‘recover and reset’ project. Resetting the way you live your life – even in tiny ways – and resetting your goals, can really pay off.

And as your health partners, the team and I will be with you every step of the way.

Set yourself a goal.

Just like star charts work for kids, goal setting works in adult life too. It doesn’t need to be big, like running a marathon, but it needs to be a challenge.

How about promising not to miss your twice weekly visit to the gym for at least six weeks? That’s an achievable goal, plus a realistic time to allow you to start feeling the benefits.

Micro goals are good too – for example, to increase the weight you lift incrementally, or the number of lengths you can swim. It’s all about the balance of challenge and achievement.

Am I too old to invest in fitness?

I don’t even have to ask you your age to answer a resounding no! It’s never too late for change, for enjoyment, for socialisation and for improving your health.

Staying active is one of the secrets to living a healthier, and hopefully longer, life. It’s true what they say, your best years are ahead of you, so why not make the most of them?

We can start your training programme with a Seca Body Scan, that measures your current fitness levels, lifestyle and biological age, then prescribes a plan to help you boost your energy levels and stamina. People are often surprised by the results, and knowing their fitness age, compared to their biological age, can give them a good reason to get stuck into fitness.

Recovery, alongside fitness

Whether you are carrying an injury or strain something along the way, building recovery into a sports programme is the way to maximise muscle health and reduce stress and inflammation. Our team can help guide you to find a programme that aids recovery.
