Lancaster mayor pays tribute after death of Captain Sir Tom Moore

The mayor of Lancaster has paid tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore, who sadly passed away on Tuesday at the age of 100.

Captain Tom, as he became popularly known, was an inspiration to millions due to his fundraising efforts.

He set out to raise £1,000 by walking 100 laps of his backyard, but he won the nation’s hearts and saw donations to his fundraising quest reach into the millions.

In tribute to his efforts he was knighted by the Queen.

Coun Malcolm Thomas, the mayor of Lancaster, said: “During some of the darkest days many of us have experienced, Captain Tom was an endless source of inspiration and hope.

“Thanks to his fundraising efforts he leaves behind a lasting legacy that will help people for many years to come.

“Our condolences go to his family and all who knew him.”

In tribute to his life, Lancaster City Council is arranging for the Ashton Memorial to be lit up.
