Lancaster charity comes to the rescue of much-loved Santa Sleigh

Lancaster Round Table is spreading festive cheer this December by taking on the popular Santa Sleigh from Carnforth Rotary.

This tradition has delighted families across Lancaster and surrounding villages for decades and now the dedicated group of Round Table volunteers will bring Santa to communities throughout the area, while raising vital funds for local good causes.

“We’re thrilled to take the reins of such a beloved tradition,” said Mark Hoggarth, Lancaster Round Table chairman.

“The Santa Sleigh brings joy to hundreds of families every Christmas, and we’re proud to keep that festive magic alive while supporting charities and community projects.”

The Santa Sleigh has long been a highlight of the local festive season with children and families lining the streets to wave at Santa and his helpers as they pass through Lancaster’s villages.

When Carnforth Rotary announced earlier this year that they could no longer continue the sleigh runs, Lancaster Round Table stepped in to ensure the tradition lives on.

They aim to honour the Rotary’s incredible dedication over the past 20 years and carry the sleigh forward for future generations.

The sleigh’s history runs deep. Before Carnforth Rotary took it on more than 20 years ago, it was originally launched by Carnforth & District Round Table who spread Christmas cheer with it for nearly 30 years.

When that group folded, Carnforth Rotary kept the tradition going – and now Lancaster Round Table are returning the favour, ensuring the sleigh continues its journey.

“It’s really special to see the sleigh return to the Round Table family,” said Luke Stott, Area 34 chairman of Round Table Lancashire.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Carnforth Rotary, not just for generously donating the sleigh but for their amazing work over the past two decades."

He added: “Thanks to their dedication, this tradition has thrived and we’re proud to carry it forward.”

This year, residents can expect some familiar routes, festive surprises and the chance to track Santa’s progress online via the Lancaster Round Table Facebook page.

All donations collected during the sleigh runs will go directly to local charities, community groups and families in need.

“It’s a big responsibility but the support has been fantastic,” said Blake Prince, former chairman of Lancaster Round Table.

“Special thanks to Rogerson’s Landrover Specialist of Galgate who’ve kindly provided a towing vehicle to help Santa and his sleigh reach every stop.

"Knowing that every donation goes straight back into helping local causes makes it even more meaningful.”

The sleigh begins its rounds in early December with a full route schedule to be announced soon on the Lancaster Round Table Facebook page.

Volunteers, businesses and community groups interested in getting involved or sponsoring the sleigh are encouraged to reach out.
