Work gets under way on expansion of historic Lancaster family business

One of Lancaster's longest-standing businesses is set to expand.

The historic Banks Lyon shoe shop closed in August, but the family is now converting it to expand their service in the jewellers next door, in order to keep the building within the family.

In July, we reported how Banks Lyon had submitted a planning application to the city council to carry out refurbishment and expansion work to the front of their properties at 36-44 Church Street.

They also applied for listed building consent because the building which houses the jewellers and former shoe shop is Grade II listed.

The council has now granted permission, and work can get under way on bringing the two shops together.

The family said on their website: "The Banks-Lyon family has been a cherished part of Lancaster's retail landscape since 1887, with a presence on Church Street dating back to 1904.

"With the recent closure of Lancaster's much-loved shoe shop following Johnathan Banks-Lyon's retirement, Banks Lyon Jewellers is set to expand our showroom into 42 Church Street, ensuring this historic building stays within the family.

"This expansion marks a new chapter for Banks Lyon Jewellers, as we honour our heritage while enhancing our offerings to the Lancaster community.

"Our commitment to quality and personalised service remains steadfast, and we are excited to welcome both long-standing patrons and new visitors to our extended showroom, where tradition and contemporary elegance come together."

PWPM Construction & Project Management of Lancaster, who worked with the business previously, on their 'OMEGA Room' earlier this year, are now working on this significant expansion of the business.
