Members and volunteers from a brain injury support group are warming up for a top triathlon performance to raise money and awareness for their charity.
Despite catastrophic brain injuries that have had a life changing impact on their physical and cognitive abilities, Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay members have overcome these barriers to try and take on the triathlon disciplines of swimming, cycling and running.
“I’m so proud of them all,” said Janet Staff, chairperson of Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay.
“You can’t imagine the amount of extra physical and psychological effort, dedication and determination they have to put into this challenge.
“To overcome their symptoms and manage to swim just half-a-length or walk a hundred metres, with a little help, is superhuman!”
The group will hold its annual triathlon next week at 3-1-5 Health Club.
This is the third year the sporting event will be held and is once again supported by the health club and Birchall Blackburn Solicitors.
“There is overwhelming evidence that links sports participation to psychological well-being among people with disabilities,” said Kelly Hutton, a group member and a serious and catastrophic injury solicitor for Birchall Blackburn Law.
“Sport aids independence, better community integration, quality of life and a strong social network.”
The triathlon will be held on November 12 at 3-1-5 Health Club in Caton Road, Lancaster, from 11am.
Anyone is welcome to come along, cheer the competitors on and donate if they can.
Louise Thornton, Commercial Director of 3-1-5 Health Clubs, said: “To see how far they’ve come since our first triathlon three years ago is just incredible.
“Our team will be there to help them through their gruelling challenges.”
Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay is a support and self-help group for those affected by any aspect of brain injury, and their families, friends, carers and associated medical professionals.
The group provides practical and emotional support as well as a vibrant social environment with activities and exercise.
