City flats plan is scaled back

Plans for 123 new student flats on the car park opposite Lancaster bus station have been scaled back.

After talks with Lancaster City Council, applicant Andrew Stanyon is now proposing 79 flats on the Damside Street car park.

The flats, some of which would measure up to 13 sq metres, with others up to 20 sq metres, would be housed within a new building behind V-Bar on Church Street.

No parking would be provided for the building, which would range from two to five storeys high.

The application states that a need has been identified within the city for good quality student accommodation “of a more contemporary nature”.

Not everyone is happy about the latest plan, however. In a letter to the council, Winnie Clark, secretary of Lancaster Civic Society, said the building would be overbearing on the small site, adding that the society had reservations about the large amount of glazing planned for the ground floor.

She added that noise from students could affect residents, a view shared by Holly Blackwell, a resident in nearby New Road, who said there was already a saturation of student accommodation in the centre and that more noisy students would “make our life intolerable”.

Mrs Blackwell said the building was too high and would block light to houses and city views.

She also predicted traffic problems on Damside Street.
