More Music gives youngsters chance to learn new skills

The Morecambe-based organisation is offering eight to 18-year-olds the chance to spend the day with experienced samba musicians.

Spring Into Samba takes place on February 15 from 10am-4pm and is free. It’s open to those who are samba beginners and those who are more experienced.

You will learn the fundamentals of samba and more advanced techniques from three expert tutors.

Samba is a vibrant and energetic style of music that originated in Brazil. A samba band is made up of many drummers and brass players playing together, often as part of a street carnival or procession. The distinctive rhythms played on different sized drums and hand percussion are multi-layered and incorporate many simple individual parts which come together as a complex sounding ensemble which creates a vibrant party atmosphere.

The three tutors include Leon Patel, the artistic director at Global Grooves, who claims to have the loudest timba slap in the West; Ben McCabe, from More Music, is a drummer and french horn player who has worked for Baybeat Carnival Band since 1999 and Abbey Blackledge, from Lancashire Music Service.
