The Midnight Soup will be performed at More Music in Morecambe

The Midnight Soup starts as a monologue and in gentle and unpresuming ways opens out to become a conversation.

Part monologue, part cookery class and part discussion, The Midnight Soup is a poetic exploration of death, suicide, family, history and commemoration.

Over the course the performance, audience members prepare a meal to share at the end in a unique theatrical experience which has been described by renowned theatre critic Lyn Gardner as being “as much about living as it is about dying”.

Through the development of The Midnight Soup, writer and performer Leo Burtin said: “I hope that the very intimate story of the show, and its format will mean that it resonates with a wide range of people.

“I hope that together it plays a role in getting us to think about one of the biggest challenges we face as a society; as we all live for longer and longer, how can we think about caring for elderly family members, ensuring the highest standards of quality of life in old age, and how we can support people in dying well, and how they wish to.”

The Midnight Soup is the love letter of a grandson to his grandmother. It is also an edible memorial, celebrating a life lived to the rhythm of the seasons.

The piece was first performed in Lancaster in 2014 and has since toured to a dozen towns and cities in the UK, from Margate to Sheffield to public and critical acclaim.
