Final murals placed for Morecambe street project

The final stage of a street art project which sees famous faces from Morecambe's showbiz past displayed across the town has been completed.

A mosaic of our town’s most famous face, Eric Morecambe has been added to the celebrity collection of hoardings outside the former Crystal T’s nightclub.

They have been created by leading Manchester artist Mark Kennedy, who has also produced other mosaics on the building including; Morecambe-born actress Dame Thora Hird and actor Sir Laurence Olivier (for his role in Morecambe-based film The Entertainer).

Graffiti art of Victoria Wood created by Rocket01 from Sheffield is also featured on the building.

Various murals can also be seen on Victoria Street in Morecambe.

Six new boards depicting comedian Albert Modley, Victoria Wood, Laurel and Hardy, Nat Jackerley, Morecambe panto dame Ronne Coyles and a Winter Gardens bill poster listing the above names have been placed on the Masonic building (the Farrell and Heyworth property).

“I am happy the project has been finalised and I hope people will enjoy the street art,” said Christine Stebbing, Chair of Morecambe Heritage and Chair of Morecambe Town Team.

“Hopefully it will attract more people to the area as after all the street art is signposted.

“The list of names also included on the wall will hopefully give the younger people more of an insight into exactly who these famous people are.”

Other street artworks on Victoria Street include a celebration of Morecambe sporting figures on the wall of Colin Brown’s hairdressers, and a colourful revamp of the

windows of St Laurence’s Church.

The street art was funded by Arts Council England, Morecambe Town Council and Portas Pilot Town Team, sponsored by Arndale Centre Morecambe and produced by Deco Publique.
