A demand for colouring books is sweeping the nation, but it’s not youngsters who are snapping them up as soon as they hit the shelves. Instead, it’s grown-ups.
The Works – which has stores in Lancaster and Morecambe – has revealed that in one week it sold more copies of Art Therapy – An Anti-Stress Colouring Book than any other product in store or online nationwide.
The colouring book for adults outsold merchandise from Disney’s Frozen, Game of Thrones and the Divergent smash movie hit.
In addition, it was the most searched for product on The Works’ website.
The colouring-in trend that’s said to have originated in France, where it was promoted as a therapeutic hobby and a way of rediscovering lost creativity, is leaving bookstore bosses struggling to cope with demand as thousands of copies fly out of their doors every week.
The Works chief executive officer Kevin Keaney said: “It’s fair to say that we’ve been taken aback a little by this new trend, but it’s great to see so many people embracing their creative side.
“Our staff have reported seeing some amazing illustrations and we’ve also had one or two instances of customers using pens and pencils from the in store stationery section to colour in the book before they buy it.”
Billed as a wonderful colouring book for adults to sit back and relax with after a long day at work, Art Therapy – An Anti-Stress Colouring Book claims to have been carefully crafted so that even amateur artists can enjoy the satisfaction of creating something exceptionally beautiful. The book’s creators also boast of the benefits from the stress-relieving effect that increased focus and creativity can provide.
