Batting first the visitors posted 128 for 9 with Sam McClements making 41 as they looked to upset the reigning champions at Clifton Park.

But despite the game being in the balance for long periods Simon Gould’s 43 not out took Shireshead to a two-wicket win.

Heysham won the toss and batted first with Andy Hill (25) battling hard as wickets tumbled around him.

James Rafferty (4 for 37) and Dave Jack (2 for 50) bowled with great control to reduce the visitors to 64 for 6 from 33 overs.

McClements took the battle back to the bowlers however and added 48 for the seventh wicket with Stefan Dixon (20) but Shireshead were the more satisfied of the two sides at tea.

The game was soon on a knife edge however as Shireshead slipped to 14 for 2 in reply.

Tom Jacques (36) and Peter Wilson (17) then seemed to have done all the hard work however as they took the score to 60 for 2.

But regular wickets kept Heysham interested and Shireshead were indebted to the cool head of Gould who guided his team home with a string of sublime boundaries.

Elsewhere in the top tier of the Westmorland League, Warton sit second behind Shireshead in the early table after a four-wicket win over Milnthorpe.

Westgate are third after a 48-run win over Silverdale while Carnforth beat Ambleside by four wickets.
