Westgate too good for Heysham while seconds remain unbeaten

The first team started off their Division One T20 Cup campaign with a seven-wicket win at Heysham on Thursday.

Heysham elected to bat first and were in massive strife from the start as the Westgate bowling, catching and ground fielding simply overwhelmed their opponents on the day.

Sam Calverley (18), Andrew Hill (18) and Sam McClements (16) were the only batters to look in form as every bowler used by the visitors took a wicket.

Dylan Conroy (2-12) and Andy Hill (2-2) took two wickets each as Heysham limped to 82-9 from 20 overs.

Any hopes of defending this total were snuffed out as Dylan Conroy (18), Khan Puffett (16), Andy Hill (14no) and Craig Buchanan (10no) eased Westgate to victory with six overs to spare.

Westgate’s second string continued their unbeaten start to the season with a winning draw over Kirkby Lonsdale at Cross Hill Park on Saturday.

The hosts won the toss and batted first, progressing steadily to a total of 130-6.

Skipper David Hannigan top scored with 53 and was well supported by Sam Frith (30).

For the visitors, Darren Troughton bowled well without any luck and young quick bowler Luke Watson bowled a hostile spell, taking 3-39.

The Kirkby Lonsdale reply never really got going and they closed on 109-8.

H. Williams (30) and A. Metcalfe (22no) tried hard for their team while Sid Gani (3-25) got three wickets and Sam Conroy (2-10) and Jacob Vaughan (2-26) both picked up two.

Westgate Under-11s travelled to Lune Road on Friday to play Lancaster in their first ever game in the hard ball league and started the campaign with a resounding 48-run win.

Batting first, captain Marcus Palamountain and Lawson Carr put on 14, and this was boosted by a stand of 18 between Nathan Allen and Matthew Bradshaw. The final pair were loan players Charlie Parkinson and Jake Rigby who added 30 to make the final total 267.

Lancaster made a steady start before being derailed by the dynamic duo of Palamountain and Carr who took five wickets between them.

Any hopes of a recovery for the home side were dashed by Parkinson who took four wickets in a two-over spell leaving the hosts 48 runs adrift as they finished on 219.
