Westgate crash out of cup to Shireshead

Westgate crashed out of the Division One cup after a 30-run defeat away at Shireshead on Thursday.

Shireshead won the toss and batted first – they finished on 167-5 thanks to a run a ball 62 not out from opener Tom Jacques and a quick 27 off nine balls from Andrew Murphy.

The wickets were shared between Westgate’s bowlers.

In reply Westgate got off to a disastrous start as they were 0-2 from the first two balls.

Andreas Arestidou (37), Dylan Conroy (24) and Craig Buchanan (51) gave Westgate a chance and at 18 overs they were one run ahead of Shireshead’s score at the same point.

However, they could not find the explosive finish that was needed and finished on 137-7.

After losing their last two league games, Westgate knew it was vital to pick up 15 points when they hosted Burneside on Saturday.

Burneside chose to bat on another good looking wicket at Cross Hill Park.

At 22-2 Westgate were on top before a 110- run partnership spanning 26 overs between Bob Davies and Ethan Elwood.

Davies fell for 66 and Elwood went on to make 80no, leaving Burneside on 185-4 from their 45 overs.

Dylan Conroy was the pick of the bowlers with 2-33.

After tea, an opening stand of 46 from Tattersall and Buchanan gave Westgate a good platform before they fell in quick succession to Dixon.

Andreas Arestidou (25), Andy Hill (6) and Khan Puffett (8) all fell leaving Westgate with 81 to win.

Sam Frith (35no) and Dylan Conroy (51no) stepped up and guided Westgate to victory, Conroy reaching 50 to win the game for the home side.

*Shireshead firsts faced Westgate at Clifton Park in the final game of the group 20/20 cup games with a place in the semi-finals days at stake on Friday.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat, finishing on 167-5 with Tom Jacjques finishing on 62 not out.

Facing a run rate of more than eight an over Westgate lost a wicket with first ball, Sam Frith caught by Phil Oliver off the bowling of Dave Jack.

Andreas Arestidou (37) Craig Buchanan (51) and Dylan Conroy (24) all batted well for Westgate but they finished 30 runs short.

The impressive Dave Jack finished 4-24 off his four overs.
