Skerton Amateur Boxing Club enhanced their reputation as one of the North West’s most successful gyms with three fighters becoming regional senior champions.

Steven Douglas, at 60kg, Bob Rowntree, 64kg, and Marcin Lewicki, 81kg, all won their respective finals to become North West champions in Manchester on Saturday night.

All three fighters won their bouts by unanimous decision, controlling their fights from start to finish.

Boxing England have recognised the achievement and awarded the club an outstanding achievement award.

The trio are now into the final rounds of the national championships that could see them become number one for their weight class in the country and go on to represent England.

The club’s successful weekend continued at a show in Congleton in Saturday night.

Jimmy Mason, 11, won by unanimous decision in an exciting bout in which he showed huge improvements.

Andre Vidal Jnr, 15, defended his North West 66kg belt with an impressive performance showcasing his skill and his undeniable power, winning all three rounds and getting a unanimous decision to retain his belt.

Coach Paul Fielding, who guides the fighters along with John Varey, said: “We aren’t a club that needs hundreds through the doors we concentrate on quality not quantity and that is proving to be a recipe for success with our recent results.”
