After the recent torrential rain and significant flooding for parts of Lancashire runners were surprised to be greeted with blue sky and sunshine for the annual Festive 4k Fun Run hosted by Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club on Sunday.
A record number of 230 runners lined up on the track to tackle the flat 4k route heading on the cycle track to Carlisle Bridge, before returning to finish on the running track.
First finisher was Michael Kallenberg running for RAF Cardiff in a speedy time of 11.47.
Michael was chased down by ex-Lancaster and Morecambe runner Michael Aspinall in 12.00 with Nathan Townsend in third place in 12.35.
First home for the local club Lancaster and Morecambe AC was Steve Worthington in fourth place in 12.41.
The ladies’ race was dominated by Lancaster and Morecambe runners taking the top two places with Scarlet Dale taking the victory in 13.50, followed very closely by Hannah Bateson in 13.52.
In third place was also an ex-Lancaster and Morecambe Runner, now running for RAF Ryston, Heather Beattie in 14.48.
Host club Lancaster and Morecambe AC had more than 60 runners out competing ranging from under 11 junior runners to veteran 75 runners and even Santa himself, his little helpers and a pushchair.
The event organisers thanked all the runners and marshals and particularly the event sponsors The Runner’s Centre, Lancaster University Sports Centre, Morrisons, Preston North End, Barton Grange, Sainsburys, Tesco, and Fox’s biscuits.
