Heysham Atoms 48-14 Halton Simms Cross

The Atoms’ free-scoring attitude brought them nine tries with loose forward Dan Helme taking the plaudits with a second half hat-trick.

Hooker Billy Livingstone darting over from dummy half to open the Atoms’ scoring but Simms Cross hit back with a try almost immediately bringing the scores to 6 -4 to the Atoms at the 20 minute mark.

Full back Michael Forrest was next to score, backing up down the middle and getting an inside ball from Mark Walker and going over the line close to the posts.

Walker was next to score, going from provider to try scorer take a flat pass close to the line and forcing his way over.

The best try of the game came near the end of the first half when Livingstone put a pin point kick into the right corner where winger Chris Thomas took on the full and beat his marker to the touch down.

A fast opening to the half for Simms Cross got them a quick-fire try, capitalising on a sloppy piece of Atoms defending.

Dan Helme scored his first try burrowing over the line after taking a switch pass around the back of the ruck from the lively Marrin at hooker.

Helme proved to be too strong for the Cross line defenders to score another Atoms try and took the score out to 30-8.

Elusive running from Andrew Collins got him into open space and he had too much pace for the covering defenders, scoring his first try of the season.

Young winger Kyel Dempsey then cut inside to score before a rapid breakout from captain Jamie Cottle took play deep into Simms Cross territory and Helme completed his 25 minute second half hat-trick, proving lethal close to the line.

The last try of the game was scored by Simms Cross who got just rewards for their efforts, taking the final score to 48-14.

*The ever improving Heysham Atoms U9s played their most physical game yet against a very aggressive Rylands Sharks side from Warrington.

The Atoms’ first period of 15 minutes was possibly the best that they have played in this their inaugural season.

Connor Hall was again named man of the match for his strong drives right into the heart of the Rylands defence, scoring the Atoms’ only try.

Sam Wheeler carried on his good form from last weekwhile Hayden Davis put in another solid performance.
