It was Hindley’s kicking game that brought them their second try, and this intriguing contest was again locked up at 12-12 until Billy Livingstone spun out of a tackle from dummy half to score the Atoms’ third try, which he also converted to give his team an 18-12 lead at the interval.

The Atoms created a bit of daylight between the two sides early in the second half when a quick-fire break from the industrious Andrew Collins got the pulses racing, and Jake Harrison ploughed through to the right of the posts for a try.

Hindley just wouldn’t be shaken off, and they got back within one score at at 24 -18 with their third converted try.

Full back Michael Forrest’s immaculate handling on a difficult afternoon was again of the highest order, and coupled with strong, balanced running, gave the Atoms a great starting point from which to clear their lines.

The Atoms were awarded a penalty 35 yards out, and they would normally take the tap and run but sensibly decided to go for the two points through the trusty boot of Livingstone, which proved pivotal at the end of the game.

Hindley continued to ask questions of the Atoms defence and found another opening, making it a tricky last five minutes as they scored to make it a two-point ball game.

Dan Helme relieved the pressure on the Atoms line though with a 40-yard break, as they showed real resilience to protect their slender lead and held on for a vital victory.
