Rallying: Class win for Burton and Capstick

The 2018 rally season started badly due to severe weather - the Malcolm Wilson Rally (jointly organised by Morecambe Car Club, Kirkby Lonsdale Motor Club and West Cumbria Motorsports Club) was cancelled due to heavy snowfall, so the next round was to be the Rally North Wales.

Local interest was via Phil Burton/Mal Capstick – the duo returning after a 12-month layoff and using their familiar Millington-engined Mk2 Escort, supported this year by Westgate Tyres/1Media/BDS Fuels & Biomass/KL Brewery/SBG Construction/J.Wright & Sons/JBSigns/Jones Plumbing/Lune Valley Car Sales, and seeded at number 15.

After a rapid but cautious start the Burton Escort was soon to be seen on maximum attack through the stages despite a failing front shock absorber.

However, that didn’t stop Phil and Mal finishing an incredible eighth overall, first in class and also second in their Modern 2wd category.

Mike Wolff/Mark Twiname were in their BayMix Concrete/Travis Perkins/MRF Tyres/C&C Fabrications supported BMW - seeded at 38, and hoping to continue their run of success following last year’s Championship class win on their debut year.

Mike Wolff and Mark Twiname took their BMW to a superb ninth overall in the Modern 2wd class - continuing the car’s development.

Ian Newton (Arkholme) had Ian Jones (Mold) co-driving in Ian’s self-funded Escort Mk2.

However, their rally was sadly short-lived when their Escort found a large hole which launched the front into the air and nearby scenery – damaging the front corner and steering.

Phil and Mal are currently leading Rally 2wd challenge.

The next round will be the Pirelli Rally - using Kielder forest on April 28.
