Rain affects play as Morecambe lose by seven wickets at Penrith

Morecambe were eventually beaten by seven wickets at Penrith on Saturday after the hosts chased down their rain-affected target.

Morecambe won the toss and captain Ryan Pearson opted to bat first, but their start was disrupted by the weather as the covers came on with the score at 5-0.

When the players returned to the field, the visitors reached 25 before the first wicket fell, as Gurdeep Farma (13) was caught by Nicky Burns off Greg Hall (3-56).

Luke Jongwe came to the crease but could only manage a knock of four before being bowled by Hall as Morecambe found themselves on 35-2.

Lewis Smith (24) was next to go after a good partnership with Jamie Heywood, the opener was bowled by Ashwin Hebbar (3-21) to leave Morecambe on 63-3.

Hall struck again to remove Heywood (25), Henry Marshall taking a fantastic diving catch to his right as Morecambe moved on to 75-4.

Alex Briggs (7) couldn’t make double figures before Marshall plucked another one out of the air off the bowling of Hebbar as Penrith started to exert their authority on the game.

Reuben Orr (0) didn’t trouble the scorers as he was bowled by Hebbar, and Daniel Edwards only managed eight runs before being bowled by Jonathon Osborne (1-55) as Morecambe were reduced to 104-7.

Jamie Cassidy was run out for just five, while captain Pearson top scored with 30 before being caught by Burns off Greg Cameron (1-11) as 
Morecambe finished on 148-9.

Penrith’s rain reduced target was 134 off 32 overs, and they did it with wickets to spare.

Morecambe’s attack made a decent start, removing Hebbar (3) thanks to Jongwe (1-23) and Ryan Pearson to leave Penrith on 3-1.

Burns managed a knock of 30 before being bowled by Jamie Cassidy (1-50) with the score now on 59-2, and the final wicket was that of Marshall (27) who was caught and bowled by Edwards.

However, from 104-3, Cameron and Hall managed to get Penrith over the line with overs to spare, the hosts finishing on 119-3 off 23.2 
overs.
