Morecambe pro Randiv in line for Sri Lanka recall

Morecambe's title-winning professional Suraj Randiv is in line for a Sri Lanka recall.

The off-spinner, who is signed up for a second season at Woodhill Lane but is yet to play, is in contention to be named in the one-day squad to face England later this summer.

Visa issues had originally delayed the 31-year-old returning to the resort with the Sri Lankan Cricket Board then requesting he stayed at home ahead of possible international return.

Randiv last represented his country in November 2014 but after starring in England as Morecambe won the Northern Premier League title last summer he was the second-leading wicket taker in domestic competition over the summer.

Woodhill Lane skipper Josh Dixon said: “Suraj’s visa finally came a couple of weeks ago and we were ready to fly him out the next day.

“But then we were told he wasn’t allowed.

“His agent spoke to (Sri Lanka’s chief selector) Sanath Jayasuriya who told him he was possibly going to be in the one-day squad.

“They had three warm-up games planned, two have already been washed out, and they wanted him in Sri Lanka for those.

“I argued he’d be better coming over and playing in England and getting acclimatised but they don’t want him to come over for fear he’ll get injured.

“It’s frustrating but Suraj has been great throughout it all and we would never stand in the way of anyone wanting to play international cricket.”

The squad is due to be announced this Sunday, May 29, and should Randiv be included Morecambe have three potential replacements lined up.
