“We respect every team we play against”: Morecambe will not take FA Cup progress for granted

Morecambe aim to avoid an FA Cup upset on Saturday.

Matty Daly says Morecambe will give AFC Rushden and Diamonds their full respect when the teams meet in the FA Cup’s fourth qualifying round on Saturday.

Victory would see the Shrimps reach the first round proper for the first time in two seasons, having fallen at the final qualifying hurdle with defeat to Chester a year ago.

Adam Lakeland’s squad has already won two qualifying round matches to reach this stage, where they meet a Diamonds team two steps beneath them in the NPL Division One Midlands.

They are yet to lose in nine league games this season and have won five FA Cup ties so far, having entered at the extra preliminary round stage on August 8.

It is the definition of a ‘banana skin’ for Morecambe, who didn’t have the ideal warm-up after losing at Worksop Town in National League North last weekend.

Daly, the Shrimps’ scorer in their 2-1 defeat, said afterwards: “We respect every team we play against, regardless of the league position, type of club, whatever.

“I think that’s our mentality going into every game; coming here to do a job.

“It’s not going to be easy but hopefully we’ll get the win.”

A sold-out home section at Hayden Road awaits the travelling Shrimps this weekend as they look to turn around their poor away form so far.

Defeat at Worksop made it four losses in six NLN games away from the Halo Aerospace Stadium this season.

It is a stark contrast to their fortunes on home soil, where they have won five and drawn one of their seven matches in all competitions.

Asked what could be changed to improve their away results, Daly said: “It’s difficult to put a finger on it.

“The first half, in the games we’ve come away, we’ve not turned up. Second half, we’ve come out of our shells a bit more.

“(We’ve) Kind of given ourselves too much to do away from home in the first 45 (minutes) really.”

The Shrimps have also confirmed that skipper Will Smith will be out for five months with a knee injury which required surgery.

Among the club’s other absentees, Jake Cain is expected back at the end of the month while Ronnie Blois and Lennon Dobson are due back in training next week.
