Morecambe’s start was mixed as Eddy Read and Jono Gates probed but struggled to find any sideways movement on a pitch which resembled the M6 motorway.

Gates stuck at it and settled into a rhythm alongside new pro Saeed Anwar Jnr – both bowled economically as skipper Josh Dixon took a smart catch at cover to dismiss Stuart Naden (16).

Gates and Anwar were working well and Chorley’s good start was starting to dwindle as Anwar claimed his first Morecambe wicket, bowling Andrew Holdsworth for a well-crafted 39.

New Cholrey professional Nekoli Parris batted a long time for his eight runs and couldn’t provide any momentum for his side.

Edwin Moulton, the younger of the two brothers, crafted a patient 21 before William Moulton took to destroying the Morecambe attack. With Jono Gates
completing his 17 overs it was left to Jake Smith to continue that control with his leg
spin.

William Moulton, however, had other ideas and didn’t allow the youngster to settle, striking a succession of boundaries. His innings of 85 from just 58 balls was an exhibition and swung the game in Chorley’s favour.

Their innings eventually came to a close at 222-8.

Morecambe’s reply started in strange fashion, having got off the mark a ball earlier skipper Dixon played
harmlessly forward, the ball travelling past his outside edge without a sound, only for the umpire to give him out after a muted appeal from the
‘keeper.

With the Morecambe skipper and faithful stunned it was the turn of the professional Anwar to feel the wrath of the umpire.

Playing forward to a ball which pitched outside leg the left hander was given out leg before wicket in another debatable
decision.

Ryan Pearson and Gareth Pedder battled hard and started to find some freedom before the rain arrived in the 17th over, the heavy downpour continued through the 18th, 19th and 20th overs before the players were removed, leaving Morecambe frustrated.

Twenty overs constitutes a game in the Northern League and with the players not returning back to the field the umpires decision to continue to play in the rain for four overs cost them.

The Woodhill Lane side left with two points to Chorley’s nine.
