Morecambe 2 AFC Telford United 1: First-half goals set up the Shrimps’ victory

Morecambe collected their first win of the National League North season on Friday evening.

Two goals from Teddy Collis helped Morecambe to secure their first National League North win of the season at the Halo Aerospace Stadium on Friday, writes DEREK QUINN.

The summer signing was handed his first start by Adam Lakeland and took full advantage of the chance with goals at the beginning and the end of a dominant first half.

Morecambe got off to the perfect start with an opening goal after just 90 seconds.

Elliot Newby won possession in midfield and played in a neat ball for Collis, who slid in and beat goalkeeper Lewys Benjamin to the ball in finding the empty net.

The Shrimps continued to dominate and created a host of chances, Benjamin twice denying Collis with superb saves and Bucks defender Zak Lilly producing a brave block from Joe Garner’s goalbound effort.

Garner and Will Smith then both failed to find the target from good openings before the Shrimps finally added a second in first-half injury time.

Collis was again the man to provide the finish after Matty Daly broke free down the left and crossed for the striker to turn the ball home via the post.

Morecambe started the second period on the front foot, Ben Williams dragging a shot wide when he should have done much better.

From there though, the visitors came back into the game with the Shrimps forced to defend for long periods.

Jack Lambert saw an effort cleared off the line by Liam Hogan and Sam McLintock went close before the visitors laid siege to the Morecambe goal in the final 10 minutes.

Myles Boney was forced into an excellent save from a dipping Remi Walker free-kick and Matty Stenson wasted a glorious chance when he volleyed over from three yards.

The Shrimps’ defence was finally breached on 88 minutes when substitute Louis Moult headed home a Walker corner at the far post to set up a tense finale.

Stenson had a chance to earn Telford a share of the spoils in injury time but, thankfully for the Shrimps, his flying header flew wide of the target as Morecambe hung on for a welcome win.
