More than 1,000 kids take part in primary schools festival

More than 1,000 school pupils battled it out at the fourth annual Lancaster and Heysham School Sport Network festival.

A total of 128 teams from 30 schools gathered at Salt Ayre Sports Centre to compete in 10 sports including dodgeball, quicksticks hockey, aquasplash, athletics, pop lacrosse and touch rugby, while Go Velo delivered sessions on biking skills and safety.

Pupils also competed in girls’ football, orienteering and tri golf to secure a place at the largest youth sporting event in the county, the SPAR Lancashire School Games.

The festival, which was opened by Lancaster MP Cat Smith, was delivered by local providers including Morecambe FC, Lancaster City Council, Heysham Golf Club, Nick Davey, Mike Orme, Red Rose Orienteering Club and Chris Mcauley, while Nathan Bibby, school games organiser for Rossendale, delivered the athletics.

More than 70 sporting leaders from Our Lady’s Catholic College, Heysham High School, and Lancaster and Morecambe College also helped out at the festival.

Great Wood Primary School and Ryelands Primary School stormed to success in girls’ football, while Bolton-le-Sands Church of England Primary School and Skerton St Luke’s CE Primary School took victory in tri golf.

St Peter’s Church of England Primary School and Christ Church Church of England Primary School also scooped a highly-coveted place at the SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals after securing the top spots in an orienteering challenge.

Now in its 10th year, the SPAR Lancashire School Games comprises two main events designed to give all children the opportunity to participate in competitive sport.

Schools across Lancashire will now battle it out for a place at the SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals to compete against pupils from 15 county districts to be crowned champions in sports including rounders, tennis, orienteering, netball, athletics and gymnastics.

More than 2,400 youngsters are expected to take part in the event at Stanley Park in Blackpool on July 5.
