Westgate proved too good for Heysham on the opening day of the Westmorland Cricket League season.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bowl, starting well with three Westgate batsman dismissed with only 26 on the board.

Reg Cupit (3-22) and Sam Calverley (2-25) did the damage as only David Lord (21) found runs easier to come by.

With the hosts 49-4 at drinks Heysham took another wicket after the break and sensed an opportunity.

But with five down the match-winning partnership of Steve Creed (25) and C Buchanan (26) put on 48 to take the game Westgate’s way.

Creed was S McClements’ (3-23) first dismissal at 105-6 as he was stumped by captain James Whincup.

Buchanan followed shortly after but Aaron Pearce (21) kept the momentum going as Westgate closed on 146 all out.

Heysham’s innings started in similar fashion as Andy Hill (2-31) and G Tattersall reduced them to 26-3.

Only Cupit (20) and Andrew Hill (14) offered some resistance and when the latter departed with the score on 47-4 A Nisbitt (3-8) and Z Buchanan (3-3) ran through the middle order and it was soon 51-9.

The heavens then opened and the players were forced off for 15 minutes with Westgate were forced to work for their win when play resumed as Cupit and H Wallbank batted for eight overs before Cupit was bowled by Creed (1-3) and Heysham were all out for 70.
