Shireshead stretched their lead at the top of the Westmorland League Division One table with a two-wicket victory at Westgate.
A hotly-anticipated match didn’t disappoint as a low-scoring affair almost produced a shock outcome.
On a difficult track, Westgate elected to bat first but struggled for fluency throughout and at 22-3 were in real trouble.
Craig Buchanan (17) and Aaron Pearce (16) serenely took the score onto 53-3 however and the game appeared in the balance, but wickets began to tumble with Sam Frith (12) the only other batsman making double figures.
James Rafferty (3-14) and Westgate old boy Peter Wilson (4-9) excelled in the bowler friendly conditions as Westgate closed on 85 all out.
In reply, at 35-3 there was an opening for Westgate, but another man returning to his old club, Danny Wilkinson (21), looked set to take his new side to a comfortable victory as the score moved onto 62-3.
But Andy Nisbet (3-14) helped reduce the visitors to 69-8 and it was very much game on.
However, Wilson (23 not out), calmed Shireshead nerves as Westgate came within a whisker of going top of the table themselves.
