Torrisholme’s first XI hosted Vernon Carus on Saturday, the below strength team elected to bat first and were given a decent start by Paul McKevitt (28), Karl Hansson (22) and Callum Steele (20) but the lower order couldn’t up the rate and post a challenging score.

Despite useful knocks from Matty Jackson and Wayne Troughton the innings petered out at 104 in 42 overs.

Ben Llewelin (three for 40) and Joe Allen (four for 34) did most of the damage.

When Vernon replied Callum Steele knocked over the prolific Christian Ash early on but James McDonagh (50 no) and Paul Richardson (43 no) saw their team home to a twelve point win.

*Grahame Clarke led a very young second XI to league challengers Blackpool.

Batting first Fran Stewart made 18 and Dan Clarke 17 but the rest of the order failed in the face of threatening pace from the Blackpool attack and the innings collapses to 70 All Out.

Blackpool’s reply started badly as Alex Hey (one for 17), James Ferguson (two for 24) and Luke Stewart (one for five) all made breakthroughs but they could not hold the Blackpool batting as they secured the win at 72 for four.

*The Sunday XI travelled to South Shore and the hosts opted to bat first. They made a good start but Tom Hird (2 for 20) then Fran Stewart (5 for 32) pegged them back.

Matt Rowley made 43 and Luke Jardine held the tail together with 24 no but 168 All Out looked vulnerable on a glorious day and a flat deck.

Simon Stewart led the Torrisholme charge with a brilliant 74, Richie Kingham (14), Sean McGuigan (19) and Joel Stewart (14 no) all chipped in to take the visitors to a convincing win at 169 for five and to the top of the league as things stand, though they have played two games more than their challengers.

A brilliant result to cheer the club up after a weekend of struggle.
