Sparrow helps Lancaster 2nds to victory

A GREAT all-round performance from Philip Sparrow helped Lancaster’s second team to victory over Carnforth.

Sparrow scored 38 with the bat as Lancaster posted 173, and then took 5-48 as Carnforth were dismissed for 128.

Carnforth won the toss and asked Lancaster to bat. Tom Williamson (16) and Dinesh Ranga started well, respecting Broadbent (3-74) and Bradley (3-57).

Ranga however played one toO many attacking shots and was clean bowled for 15.

This brought the maturing Atkinson (29) to the wicket he and Williamson moved the score past 60 before both fell hitting the ball straight to the fielders.

As a result, Mike Armstrong and Billy Swarbrick came together and they made a quick partnership of 20 until a mix-up ended in Swarbrick (6) being run out.

Derham soon returned to the pavilion for a duck. Steven Armstrong (11) then rebuilt along side his father and together they took the score into the 120s before Steven was bowled.

Sparrow, back from playing cricket in Holland, then came to the crease and he didn’t waste any time hitting two sixes down the ground.

Along with Sparrow, Mike Armstrong (31) helped Lancaster reach 173.

In reply, Carnforth struggled to cope with the pace of Atkinson (1-26) and Sparrow as they cleanly bowled the opening pair.

Adam Derham showed his versatility as after bowling well last week he kept well behind the stumps, but it was Ranga who swooped to run out Hodkinson with only one wicket to aim at to leave Carnforth reeling at 13-3.

Bragg (11) and Gallagher (14) were both out by great catches from M Armstrong and Williamson.

Nathan Baxter bowled a good length but unfortunately had two dismissals cancelled out with no balls.

Carnforth captain, Potter (45) held the Carnforth innings together along with Bradley (29) and the game was in the balance.

But it was Sparrow who made the difference dismissing Potter caught and bowled and then ripping through the Carnforth tail, bowling Waite and Broadbent.

Baxter finished with respectable figures of 2-31 as a youthful Lancaster side pulled off a great victory.
