MORECAMBE’S game against Leyland at Woodhill Lane was a thrilling, low-scoring affair, and the defending champions recovered from 69-7 chasing 135 to win by three wickets.
Professional Brett Pelser, who made an unbeaten 60 and Peter Cummings, who was undefeated on 21 were the Leyland heroes in a match-winning stand of 66. Morecambe’s fast bowling professional Anwar Ali had wrecked the Leyland top order in a spell of 6-67 that took his side to the brink of victory.
He also thought he had trapped Pelser clean in front, but alas the umpire disagreed, in what was a game changing decision.
Earlier Luis Reece took 3-55 and Cummings 4-19 to reduce Morecambe to 93-9 as Wood head, Edge and Ali all got into the 20s but couldn’t go on to make a telling contribution on an excellent cricket wicket.
In the end the home side were indebted to Alex Thistlethwaite and James Law who combined to post 41 for the last wicket and give their side a competitive total.
