Olympians go for gold

THE eyes of the world will on some of the city’s sports stars as they bid for Olympic glory over the next week.

Team GB’s men’s water polo team, including Lancaster Water Polo Club players Ciaran James, Glen Robinson and Alex Parsonage, begin their campaign this Sunday, July 29, against Romania at 6.20pm.

The women, featuring local girls Alex Rutlidge and Beckie Kershaw, start the following day against Russia, also in the Olympic Park’s Water Polo Arena at 6.20pm.

The men, who play five games in Group B in a bid to secure a quarter-final spot, continue their campaign against Serbia on Tuesday, before playing the United States, next Thursday, August 2.

The complete the group stages against Hungary on Saturday, August 4, and Montenegro two days later.

The women, in a group of four, play Australia next Wednesday, before finishing their preliminary round against Italy on Friday, August 3.

Also in the pool, but swimming, Lancaster’s Rob Bale will be competing in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

The heats at the Aquatics Centre are next Tuesday, July 31, at around 11am with the final at about 8.45pm later the same day.
