On Saturday, March 23 Great Wood traveled to Hinckley in Leicestershire to compete in the English Schools Table Tennis Association (ESTTA) Butterfly National Team Finals.
The girls qualified for this event by going through three previous events – the Lancashire Championships, the Northern England Championships and the Mixed Zone Championships.
Great Wood were competing in the Girls Under-11 category with three other Zone champions from across England.
The standard at this event is the highest there can be for a team competition and there were England internationals amongst the finalists.
The format was a round-robin where all four teams played each other.
Great Wood’s first match was against a school from Buckinghamshire.
The Great Wood girls won this 6-2 with victories for Alice Dillon, Rosie Logue and Natasha Norman, getting them off to a brilliant start.
Their second match was against a team from Grantham in Lincolnshire, which they again won 6-2, with wins for Alice, Rosie, Naomi Collins and Amy Edwards.
Owing to other results, they knew that a draw in their final game would be enough to secure the title.
This was against a very strong team from Kensington in London and they took a 2-0 with wins from Rosie and Alice.
Great Wood were then pegged back to 2-2 before Rosie and Alice both won their second matches to ensure the team achieved at least a draw.
The final two matches were superfluous and the match ended in a 4-4 draw, ensuring that Great Wood became champions of England.
It’s a team event and all five girls won at least one of their matches throughout the long day.
*Alice Dillon has been selected to play for England in a Home Counties International event during the Easter school holidays.
She is currently ranked Number 1 in England for Under-11 Girls.
