Kirkby Lonsdale edged out Birkenhead Park in an entertaining encounter at Underley Park on Saturday.

Ryan Terry kicked the first points for Kirkby after a Park infringement to give them a 3-0 lead after eight minutes.

The hosts extended their lead when hooker Dan Armistead finished a move he started by taking a scrum against the head. Stuart Story put in a typically dynamic run to get the ball close before the number two did the rest.

Park got on the scoreboard with a fine penalty, kicking against the wind to make it 8-3, before Kirkby stood firm up until the break in a key 10 minutes in the context of the game.

It remained nip and tuck after the break with Kirkby missing a penalty before David Bird scored a fine debut try to make it 13-3.

Park were missing penalties of their own but eventually converted when they had a man advantage after Jack Akrigg’s yellow card.

The visitors’ hopes were hit when they were reduced to 14 men themselves with Kirkby having to see out seven minutes of stoppage time before securing victory.
