Lancaster Nomads 1st retained their position at the top of the Lancashire Women’s Hockey Association Division One table with a 6-0 win away at Witton Warriors.
Witton had the upper hand in the first half playing some slick, fast-paced hockey but Nomads remained composed and when a counter-attacking move resulted in a Nomads penalty corner Rachel Earnshaw was there to slot in an Alison Davies sweep.
Nomads controlled the game more in the second half although Witton still maintained a constant threat throughout.
Alice Phipps scored Nomads’ second of the afternoon from another penalty corner.
A fast attacking move down the right wing allowed Hazel Irwin to draw the keeper and set up a swift and accurate finish from man of the match Phipps.
Witton continued to break through the midfield but Nomads’ defence blocked any attempt on goal.
Nomads’ fourth goal came from a penalty flick, calmly dispatched by Amy Leck after a Witton foot stopped the ball on the goal line.
Leck added her second of the game when her base line run gave her the chance to pick up a rebound from the Witton keeper and reverse stick the ball into the net.
Nomads’ final goal was scored by top goalscorer Irwin when she drove into the Witton ‘D’ and slotted the ball between the keeper’s pads.
Nomads 1st also played on Sunday, losing 3-0 away at Southport 1st in the Lishman Plate.
