LANCASTER water polo players Beckie Kershaw and Alex Rutlidge helped Great Britain to seal qualification for next year’s European Championship in Eindhoven with an emphatic victory over Ukraine at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
Great Britain started the match in positive fashion taking the lead in their first attack after a Ukraine defender was excluded for 20 seconds.
However, the visitors struck back to equalise and the remainder of the first quarter was closely fought. The score at the end of the period, 3-2 in GB’s favour.
In the second quarter Ukraine’s physical approach began to take its toll as Great Britain took command of the game.
Both Beckie and Alex made significant contributions with goal assists and strong defensive work.
By half-time GB were well on the way to victory with a 10-3 lead.
The flow of the match was even and at the third break GB were almost certain of victory with a 14-6 lead.
The final quarter was much like the second as Ukraine seemed to run out of steam as the fitter Great Britain scored a further seven goals to make the final score 21-8.
Their final game away to Israel is now academic.
